How to Have a Good Year, Every Year

Many of us define how a year goes based on its number of ups and downs, yet whether something is good or bad really depends on one’s perspective. There is always a light at the end of every tunnel if we just redirect our attention correctly. Perhaps as your reading this, you’re going through some sort of despair – maybe the loss of a loved one, the feeling of having no control, a broken heart, perhaps it’s your health, or the feeling of helplessness, perhaps you find it hard to love yourself – whatever it is, those low points have a purpose even if it isn’t immediately evident. Therefore, don’t accept defeat and be quick to call it a “bad day.” Instead, look for what you can gain when you persevere.

On the other hand, you may be reading this coming from a high in your life and with the hope that the rest of the year will continue in the same fashion. My message to you is to not let your guard down because inevitably, you will experience obstacles, and your ability to keep positive will be tested. Embrace the highs and grow from the lows. It will ensure that your year is filled with gratitude, lessons learned, and self-improvement no matter what life throws your way.

Though the majority of us aren’t willing to admit this, we need those moments of extreme lows to bring out the best in ourselves. You’ll never know your full potential until you conquer the obstacles set on your path. Life, afterall, is not straight, so it’s impossible to go through it without ever experiencing some sort of set-back. Instead of victimizing yourself, see these moments as growth opportunities.

Last year, could have been a really terrible year for me in hindsight. I started 2018 with two deaths in my family and a job with people I disliked. It was the lowest point I had ever been in my entire life, but a year later, I’m better because of it and 2018 ended up being my best year to date. Needless to say, if I had to go through it again knowing what I know now, I would. I’ll be writing a separate post on this soon.

With that said, I hope everyone is off to a great start to 2019! Remember to have gratitude for the highs and the lows, that everything happens for a reason, and to stay positive!
